Solar gate opener technology is a great alternative for a gate opener that is too far away from a conventional power source. Amazing Gates carries many access controls compatible for use with a solar gate opener. In most cases, you won't even know it's solar powered. The secret is in a good deep cycle marine battery wired directly to a solar panel facing due south with plenty of sunlight between 10 am and 2 pm.

A simple system comprised of operator, radio controls, and an exit sensor will open a gate about 15 times every day with a 20 watt solar module. To increase the number of cycles per day, you will need to add solar modules.

With marine cycle batteries charged by the appropriate panel, a solar powered gate opener is as reliable as 110 volt A.C. systems. The reliability is impacted by the amount of equipment drawing power and by the number of gate opening cycles per day. If your gate is to be used more than about 15 times a day or you need a telephone entry system, you may need additional panels. See the chart below for an estimate of the cycles produced per watt depending on your location and call us to help you design your system.

Solar-powered gates are not run directly from the solar panel, but by the battery recharged on a daily basis by a solar panel. The battery can also power options such as an exit sensor, photo eye or keypad. In the case of a power outtage, your gate opener can continue to operate as it would on any other day.

We also recommend a voltage meter to examine the charge on the battery in colder months. Our gate opener packages offered above provide ample storage space for two marine batteries. Both the marine battery and the voltage meter are available in your local home improvement stores.
